وَمآٰ اَنْزَلْناٰ عَلٰ۩٢٤فَغَفَرْناٰ لَهُۥ ذٰلِكَۖ وَاِنَّ لَهُۥ عِنْدَناٰ لَزُلْفٰ
After him We did not send down on his people a host from the sky, nor We would have sent down. 28It was but a single Cry, and, behold, they were stilled [like burnt ashes]! 29How regrettable of the servants! There did not come to them any apostle but that they used to deride him. 30Have they not regarded how many generations We have destroyed before them who will not come back to them? 31And all of them will indeed be presented before Us. 32A sign for them is the dead earth, which We revive and bring forth grain out of it, so they eat of it. 33We make in it orchards of date palms and vines, and We cause springs to gush forth in it, 34so that they may eat of its fruit and what their hands have cultivated. Will they not then give thanks? 35Immaculate is He who has created all the kinds of what the earth grows, and of themselves, and of what they do not know. 36A sign for them is the night, which We strip of daylight, and, behold, they find themselves in the dark! 37The sun runs on to its place of rest: That is the ordaining of the All-mighty, the All-knowing. 38As for the moon, We have ordained its phases, until it becomes like an old palm leaf. 39Neither it behooves the sun to overtake the moon, nor may the night outrun the day, and each swims in an orbit. 40A sign for them is that We carried their progeny in the laden ship, 41and We have created for them what is similar to it, which they ride. 42And if We like We drown them, whereat they have no one to call for help, nor are they rescued 43except by a mercy from Us and for an enjoyment until some time. 44And when they are told, ‘Beware of that which is before you and that which is behind you, so that you may receive [His] mercy…’ 45There does not come to them any sign from among the signs of their Lord but that they have been disregarding it. 46When they are told, ‘Spend out of what Allah has provided you,’ the faithless say to the faithful, ‘Shall we feed [someone] whom Allah would feed, if He wished? You are only in manifest error.’ 47And they say, ‘When will this promise be fulfilled, should you be truthful?’ 48They do not await but a single Cry that will seize them as they wrangle. 49Then they will not be able to make any will, nor will they return to their folks. 50And when the Trumpet is blown, behold, there they will be, scrambling towards their Lord from their graves! 51They will say, ‘Woe to us! Who raised us from our place of sleep?’ ‘This is what the All-beneficent had promised, and the apostles had spoken the truth!’ 52It will be but a single Cry, and, behold, they will all be presented before Us! 53‘Today no soul will be wronged in the least, nor will you be requited except for what you used to do.’ 54Indeed today the inhabitants of paradise rejoice in their engagements 55—they and their mates, reclining on couches in the shades. 56There they have fruits, and they have whatever they want. 57‘Peace!’—a watchword from the all-merciful Lord. 58And ‘Get apart today, you guilty ones!’ 59‘Did I not exhort you, O children of Adam, saying, “Do not worship Satan. He is indeed your manifest enemy. 60Worship Me. That is a straight path”? 61Certainly, he has led astray many of your generations. Have you not exercised your reason? 62This is the hell you had been promised! 63Enter it today, because of what you used to deny. 64Today We shall seal their mouths, and their hands shall speak to Us, and their feet shall bear witness concerning what they used to earn.’ 65Had We wished We would have blotted out their eyes: then, were they to advance towards the path, how would have they seen? 66And had We wished We would have deformed them in their place; then they would neither have been able to move ahead nor to return. 67And whomever We give a long life, We cause him to regress in creation. Then, will they not exercise their reason? 68We did not teach him poetry, nor does it behoove him. This is just a reminder and a manifest Quran, 69so that anyone who is alive may be warned, and that the word may come due against the faithless. 70Have they not seen that We have created for them—of what Our hands have worked—cattle, so they have become their masters? 71And We made them tractable for them; so some of them make their mounts and some of them they eat. 72There are other benefits for them therein, and drinks. Will they not then give thanks? 73They have taken gods besides Allah, [hoping] that they might be helped [by the fake deities]. 74[But] they cannot help them, while they [themselves] are an army mobilized for their defence. 75So do not let their remarks grieve you. We indeed know whatever they hide and whatever they disclose. 76Does not man see that We created him from a drop of [seminal] fluid, and, behold, he is an open contender!? 77He draws comparisons for Us, and forgets his own creation. He says, ‘Who shall revive the bones when they have decayed?’ 78Say, ‘He will revive them who produced them the first time, and He has knowledge of all creation. 79He, who made for you fire out of the green tree, and, behold, you light fire from it! 80Is not He who created the heavens and the earth able to create the like of them? Yes indeed! He is the All-creator, the All-knowing. 81All His command, when He wills something, is to say to it ‘Be,’ and it is. 82So immaculate is He in whose hand is the dominion of all things, and to whom you shall be brought back. 83Surah As-SaffatMakiha182In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.By the [angels] ranged in ranks, 1by the ones who drive [the clouds] vigorously, 2by the ones who recite the reminder: 3indeed your God is certainly One, 4the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and the Lord of the easts. 5Indeed We have adorned the lowest heaven with the finery of the stars, 6and to guard from any froward devil. 7They do not eavesdrop on the Supernal Elite—they are shot at from every side, 8to drive them away, and there is a perpetual punishment for them— 9except any who snatches a snatch, whereat a piercing flame pursues him. 10Ask them, is their creation more prodigious or [that of other creatures] that We have created? Indeed, We created them from a viscous clay. 11Indeed you wonder, while they engage in ridicule, 12and [even] when admonished do not take admonition, 13and when they see a sign they make it an object of ridicule, 14and say, ‘This is nothing but plain magic!’ 15‘What! When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected? 16And our forefathers too?!’ 17Say, ‘Yes! And you will be utterly humble.’ 18It will be only a single shout and, behold, they will look on, 19and say, ‘Woe to us! This is the Day of Retribution!’ 20‘This is the Day of Judgement that you used to deny!’ 21 ‘Muster the wrongdoers and their mates and what they used to worship 22besides Allah, and show them the way to hell! 23[But first] stop them! For they must be questioned.’ 24‘Why is it that you do not support one another [today]?’ 25‘Indeed, they are [meek and] submissive today!’ 26Some of them will turn to others, questioning each other. 27They will say, ‘Indeed you used to accost us peremptorily.’ 28They will answer, ‘No, you [yourselves] had no faith. 29We had no authority over you. No, you [yourselves] were a rebellious lot. 30So our Lord’s word became due against us that we shall indeed taste [the punishment]. 31So we perverted you, for we were perverse [ourselves].’ 32So, that day they will share the punishment. 33Indeed, that is how We deal with the guilty. 34Indeed, it was they who, when they were told, ‘There is no god except Allah,’ used to be disdainful, 35and [they would] say, ‘Shall we abandon our gods for a crazy poet?’ 36Indeed, he has brought [them] the truth, and confirmed the [earlier] apostles. 37Indeed you will taste the painful punishment, 38and you will be requited only for what you used to do 39—[all] except Allah’s exclusive servants. 40For such there is a known provision 41—fruits—and they will be held in honour, 42in the gardens of bliss, 43[reclining] on couches, facing one another, 44served around with a cup, from a clear fountain, 45snow-white, delicious to the drinkers, 46wherein there will be neither headache nor will it cause them stupefaction, 47and with them will be maidens, of restrained glances with big [beautiful] eyes, 48as if they were hidden ostrich eggs. 49Some of them will turn to others, questioning each other. 50One of them will say, ‘Indeed I had a companion 51who used to say, ‘‘Are you really among those who affirm 52that when we have died and become dust and bones, we shall be brought to retribution?’’ ’ 53He will say, ‘Will you have a look?’ 54Then he will take a look and sight him in the middle of hell. 55He will say, ‘By Allah, you had almost ruined me! 56Had it not been for my Lord’s blessing, I too would have been among those mustered [in hell]!’ 57‘Is it [true] that we shall not die [anymore], 58aside from our earlier death, and that we shall not be punished? 59This is indeed the supreme triumph!’ 60Let all workers work for the like of this! 61Is this a better reception, or the Zaqqum tree? 62Indeed We have made it a punishment for the wrongdoers. 63It is a tree that rises from the depths of hell. 64Its spathes are as if they were devils’ heads. 65They will eat from it and gorge with it their bellies. 66On top of that they will take a solution of scalding water. 67Then their retreat will be toward hell. 68They had found their fathers astray, 69yet they press onwards in their footsteps. 70Most of the former peoples went astray before them, 71and We had certainly sent warners among them. 72So observe how was the fate of those who were warned 73—[all] except Allah’s exclusive servants! 74Certainly Noah called out to Us, and how well did We respond! 75We delivered him and his family from their great distress, 76and made his descendants the survivors, 77and left for him a good name among posterity: 78‘Peace to Noah, throughout the nations!’ 79Thus do We reward the virtuous. 80He is indeed one of Our faithful servants. 81Then We drowned the rest. 82Indeed Abraham was among his followers, 83when he came to his Lord with a sound heart [untainted by sin]. 84When he said to his father and his people, ‘What is it that you are worshiping? 85Is it a lie, gods other than Allah, that you desire? 86Then what is your idea about the Lord of all the worlds?’ 87Then he made an observation of the stars 88and said, ‘Indeed I am sick!’ 89So they went away leaving him behind. 90Then he stole away to their gods and said, ‘Will you not eat? 91Why do you not speak?’ 92Then he attacked them, striking forcefully. 93They came running towards him. 94He said, ‘Do you worship what you have yourselves carved, 95when Allah has created you and whatever you make?’ 96They said, ‘Build a structure for him and cast him into a huge fire.’ 97So they sought to outwit him, but We made them the lowermost. 98He said, ‘Indeed I am going toward my Lord, who will guide me.’ 99‘My Lord! Give me [an heir], one of the righteous.’ 100So We gave him the good news of a forbearing son. 101When he was old enough to assist in his endeavour, he said, ‘My son! I see in dreams that I am sacrificing you. See what you think.’ He said, ‘Father! Do whatever you have been commanded. If Allah wishes, you will find me to be patient.’ 102So when they had both surrendered [to Allah’s will], and he had laid him down on his forehead, 103We called out to him, ‘O Abraham! 104You have indeed fulfilled your vision! Thus indeed do We reward the virtuous! 105This was indeed a manifest test.’ 106Then We ransomed him with a great sacrifice, 107and left for him a good name in posterity: 108‘Peace be to Abraham!’ 109Thus do We reward the virtuous. 110He is indeed one of Our faithful servants. 111And We gave him the good news of [the birth of] Isaac, a prophet, one of the righteous. 112And We blessed him and Isaac. Among their descendants [some] are virtuous, and [some] who manifestly wrong themselves. 113Certainly We favoured Moses and Aaron, 114and delivered them and their people from their great distress, 115and We helped them so that they became the victors. 116We gave them the illuminating scripture 117and guided them to the straight path, 118and left for them a good name in posterity. 119‘Peace be to Moses and Aaron!’ 120Thus indeed do We reward the virtuous. 121They are indeed among Our faithful servants. 122Indeed Ilyas was one of the apostles. 123When he said to his people, ‘Will you not be Godwary? 124Do you invoke Baal and abandon the best of creators, 125Allah, your Lord and Lord of your forefathers?,’ 126they impugned him. So they will indeed be mustered [in hell] 127—[all] except Allah’s exclusive servants. 128We left for him a good name in posterity. 129‘Peace be to Ilyas!’ 130Thus indeed do We reward the virtuous. 131He is indeed one of Our faithful servants. 132Indeed Lot was one of the apostles. 133When We delivered him and all his family, 134excepting an old woman among those who remained behind, 135We destroyed the rest. 136Indeed you pass by them at dawn 137and at night. Do you not exercise your reason? 138Indeed Jonah was one of the apostles. 139When he absconded toward the laden ship, 140he drew lots with them and was the one to be condemned [as one to be thrown overboard]. 141Then the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy. 142Had he not been one of those who celebrate Allah’s glory, 143he would have surely remained in its belly till the day they will be resurrected. 144 Then We cast him on a bare shore, and he was sick. 145So We made a gourd plant grow above him. 146We sent him to a [community of] hundred thousand or more, 147and they believed [in him]. So We provided for them for a while. 148Ask them, are daughters to be for your Lord while sons are to be for them? 149Did We create the angels females while they were present? 150Be aware that it is out of their mendacity that they say, 151‘Allah has begotten [offsprings],’ and they indeed speak a falsehood. 152Has He preferred daughters to sons? 153What is the matter with you? How do you judge? 154Will you not then take admonition? 155Do you have a manifest authority? 156Then produce your scripture, should you be truthful. 157And they have set up a kinship between Him and the jinn, while the jinn certainly know that they will be presented [before Him]. 158Clear is Allah of whatever they allege [about Him] 159—[all] except Allah’s exclusive servants. 160Indeed you and what you worship 161cannot mislead [anyone] about Him, 162except someone who is bound for hell. 163‘There is none among us but has a known place. 164It is we who are the ranged ones. 165It is we who celebrate Allah’s glory.’ 166They indeed, used to say, 167‘Had we possessed a Reminder from our predecessors, 168we would have surely been Allah’s exclusive servants.’ 169But they disbelieved it [when it came to them]. Soon they will know! 170Certainly Our decree has gone beforehand in favour of Our servants, the apostles, 171that they will indeed receive [Allah’s] help, 172and indeed Our hosts will be the victors. 173So leave them alone for a while, 174and watch them; soon they will see [the truth of the matter]! 175Do they seek to hasten Our punishment? 176But when it descends in their courtyard it will be a dismal dawn for those who had been warned. 177So leave them alone for a while, 178and watch; soon they will see! 179Clear is your Lord, the Lord of Might, of whatever they allege [concerning Him]. 180Peace be to the apostles! 181All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all the worlds. 182Surah SadMakiha88In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.Suad. By the Quran bearing the Reminder, 1the faithless indeed dwell in conceit and defiance. 2How many a generation We have destroyed before them! They cried out [for help], but gone was the time for escape. 3They consider it odd that there should come to them a warner from among themselves, and the faithless say, ‘This is a magician, a mendacious liar.’ 4‘Has he reduced the gods to one god? This is indeed an odd thing!’ 5Their elite go about [urging others]: ‘Go and stand by your gods! This is indeed the desirable thing [to do]. 6We did not hear of this in the latter-day creed. This is nothing but a fabrication. 7Has the Reminder been sent down to him out of [all of] us?’ Indeed, they are in doubt concerning My Reminder. Indeed, they have not yet tasted My punishment. 8Do they possess the treasuries of the mercy of your Lord, the All-mighty, the All-munificent? 9Do they own the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them? [If so,] let them ascend [to the higher spheres] by the means [of ascension]. 10[They are but] a host routed out there of the factions. 11Before them Noah’s people impugned [their apostle] and [so did the people of] ‘Ad, and Pharaoh, the Impaler [of his victims], 12and Thamud, and the people of Lot, and the inhabitants of Aykah: those were the factions. 13There was not any one but such as impugned the apostles; so My retribution became due [against them]. 14These [too] do not await but a single Cry, which will not grant [them] any respite. 15They say, ‘Our Lord! Hasten on for us our share before the Day of Reckoning.’ 16Be patient over what they say, and remember Our servant, David, [the man] of strength. Indeed he was a penitent [soul]. 17We disposed the mountains to glorify [Allah] with him at evening and dawn, 18and the birds [as well], mustered [in flocks]; all echoing him [in a chorus]. 19We consolidated his kingdom and gave him wisdom and conclusive speech. 20Has there not come to you the account of the contenders, when they scaled the wall into the sanctuary? 21When they entered into the presence of David, he was alarmed by them. They said, ‘Do not be afraid. [We are only] two contenders: one of us has bullied the other. So judge justly between us, and do not exceed [the bounds of justice], and show us the right path.’ 22‘This brother of mine has ninety-nine ewes, while I have only a single ewe, and [yet] he says, ‘Commit it to my care,’ and he browbeats me in speech.’ 23He said, ‘He has certainly wronged you by asking your ewe in addition to his own ewes, and indeed many partners bully one another, except such as have faith and do righteous deeds, and few are they.’ Then David knew that We had tested him, whereat he pleaded with his Lord for forgiveness, and fell down in prostration and repented. 24So We forgave him that, and indeed he has [a station of] nearness with Us and a good destination. 25‘O David! Indeed, We have made you a vicegerent on the earth. So judge between people with justice, and do not follow your desires, or they will lead you astray from the way of Allah. Indeed there is a severe punishment for those who stray from the way of Allah, because of their forgetting the Day of Reckoning.’ 26We did not create the sky and the earth and whatever is between them in vain. That is a conjecture of the faithless. So woe to the faithless for the Fire! 27Shall We treat those who have faith and do righteous deeds like those who cause corruption on the earth? Shall We treat the Godwary like the vicious? 28[This is] a blessed Book that We have sent down to you, so that they may contemplate its signs, and that those who possess intellect may take admonition. 29And to David We gave Solomon—what an excellent servant he was! Indeed, he was a penitent [soul]. 30One evening when there were displayed before him prancing steeds, 31he said, ‘Indeed I have preferred the love of [worldly] niceties to the remembrance of my Lord until [the sun] disappeared behind the [night’s] veil.’ 32‘Bring it back for me!’ Then he [and others] began to wipe [their] legs and necks. 33Certainly We tried Solomon, and cast a [lifeless] body on his throne. Thereupon he was penitent. 34He said, ‘My Lord! Forgive me, and grant me a kingdom that will not befit anyone except me. Indeed You are the All-munificent.’ 35So We disposed the wind for him, blowing softly wherever he intended by his command, 36and every builder and diver from the demons, 37and others [too] bound together in chains. 38‘This is Our bounty: so withhold or bestow without any reckoning.’ 39Indeed he has [a station of] nearness with Us and a good destination. 40And remember Our servant Job [in the Quran]. When he called out to his Lord, ‘The devil has visited on me hardship and torment,’ 41[We told him:] ‘Stamp your foot on the ground; this [ensuing spring] will be a cooling bath and drink.’ 42We gave [back] his family to him along with others like them, as a mercy from Us and an admonition for those who possess intellect. 43[We told him:] ‘Take a faggot in your hand and then strike [your wife] with it, but do not break [your] oath.’ Indeed, We found him to be patient. What an excellent servant! Indeed he was a penitent [soul]. 44And remember Our servants, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, men of strength and insight. 45Indeed We purified them with exclusive remembrance of the abode [of the Hereafter]. 46Indeed they are surely with Us among the elect of the best. 47And remember Ishmael, Elisha and Dhu’l-Kifl—each [of whom was] among the elect. 48This is a Reminder, and indeed the Godwary have a good destination: 49the Gardens of Eden, whose gates will be flung open for them. 50Reclining therein [on couches], they will call for abundant fruits and drinks, 51 and there will be with them maidens of restrained glances, of a like age. 52This is what you are promised on the Day of Reckoning. 53This is Our provision, which will never be exhausted. 54This [will be for the righteous], and as for the rebellious there will surely be a bad destination: 55hell, which they shall enter, an evil resting place. 56[They will be told, ‘This is scalding water and pus; let them taste it, 57and other kinds [of torments] resembling it.’ 58[The leaders of the faithless will be told,] ‘This is a group [of your followers] plunging [into hell] along with you.’ [They will repond,] ‘May wretchedness be their lot! For they will enter the Fire.’ 59They will say, ‘No, may wretchedness be your lot! You prepared this [hell] for us. What an evil abode!’ 60They will say, ‘Our Lord! Whoever has prepared this for us, double his punishment in the Fire!’ 61And they will say, ‘Why is it that we do not see [here] men whom we used to count among the bad ones, 62ridiculing them, or do [our] eyes miss them [here]?’ 63That is indeed a true account of the contentions of the inmates of the Fire. 64Say, ‘I am just a warner, and there is no god except Allah, the One, the All-paramount, 65the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the All-mighty, the All-forgiver.’ 66Say, ‘It is a great prophesy, 67of which you are disregardful. 68I have no knowledge of the Supernal Elite when they contend. 69All that is revealed to me is that I am just a manifest warner.’ 70When your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed I am about to create a human being out of clay. 71So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, then fall down in prostration before him.’ 72Thereat the angels prostrated, all of them together, 73but not Iblis; he acted arrogantly and he was one of the faithless. 74He said, ‘O Iblis! What keeps you from prostrating before that which I have created with My [own] two hands? Are you arrogant, or are you one of the exalted ones?’ 75‘I am better than him,’ he said. ‘You created me from fire and You created him from clay.’ 76He said, ‘Begone hence, for you are indeed an outcast, 77and indeed My curse will be on you till the Day of Retribution.’ 78He said, ‘My Lord! Respite me till the day they will be resurrected.’ 79Said He, ‘You are indeed among the reprieved 80until the day of the known time.’ 81He said, ‘By Your might, I will surely pervert them, 82except Your exclusive servants among them.’ 83Said He, ‘The truth is that—and I speak the truth— 84I will surely fill hell with you and all those who follow you.’ 85Say, ‘I do not ask you any reward for it, and I am no impostor. 86It is just a reminder for all the nations, 87and you will surely learn its tidings in due time.’ 88Surah Az-ZumarMakiha75In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.The [gradual] sending down of the Book is from Allah, the All-mighty, the All-wise. 1Indeed We have sent down the Book to you with the truth; so worship Allah, putting exclusive faith in Him. 2Indeed, only exclusive faith is worthy of Allah, and those who take other as awliya besides Him [claiming,] ‘We only worship them so that they may bring us near to Allah,’ Allah will judge between them concerning that about which they differ. Indeed Allah does not guide someone who is a liar and an ingrate. 3Had Allah intended to take a son, He could have chosen from those He has created whatever He wished. Immaculate is He! He is Allah, the One, the All-paramount. 4He created the heavens and the earth with consummate wisdom. He winds the night over the day, and winds the day over the night, and He has disposed the sun and the moon, each moving for a specified term. Indeed, He is the All-mighty, the All-forgiver! 5He created you from a single soul, then made from it its mate, and He has sent down for you eight mates of the cattle. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, in a threefold darkness. That is Allah, your Lord! To Him belongs all sovereignty. There is no god except Him. Then where are you being led away? 6If you are ungrateful, Allah has indeed no need of you, though He does not approve ingratitude for His servants; and if you give thanks, He approves that for you. No bearer shall bear another’s burden; then your return will be to your Lord, whereat He will inform you concerning what you used to do. Indeed, He knows best what is in the breasts. 7When distress befalls man, he supplicates his Lord, turning to Him penitently. Then, when He grants him a blessing from Himself, he forgets that for which he had supplicated Him earlier and sets up equals to Allah, that he may lead [people] astray from His way. Say, ‘Revel in your ingratitude for a while. Indeed you are among the inmates of the Fire.’ 8Is he who supplicates in the watches of the night, prostrating and standing, apprehensive of the Hereafter and expecting the mercy of his Lord...? Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know?’ Only those who possess intellect take admonition. 9Say, ‘[Allah declares:] “O My servants who have faith! Be wary of your Lord. For those who do good in this world there will be a good [reward], and Allah’s earth is vast. Indeed the patient will be paid in full their reward without any reckoning.” ’ 10Say, ‘I have been commanded to worship Allah with exclusive faith in Him, 11and I have been commanded to be the foremost of those who submit [to Him].’ 12Say, ‘Indeed, should I disobey my Lord, I fear the punishment of a tremendous day.’ 13Say, ‘I worship [only] Allah, putting my exclusive faith in Him. 14You worship whatever you wish besides Him.’ Say, ‘The losers are those who ruin themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection.’ Indeed, that is a manifest loss! 15There will be canopies of fire above them, and [similar] canopies beneath them. With that Allah deters His servants. So, My servants, be wary of Me! 16As for those who stay clear of the worship of fake deities and turn penitently to Allah, there is good news for them. So give good news to My servants 17who listen to the word [of Allah] and follow the best [interpretation] of it. They are the ones whom Allah has guided, and it is they who possess intellect. 18Can he against whom the word of punishment has become due…? Can you rescue someone who is in the Fire? 19But as for those who are wary of their Lord, for them there will be lofty abodes with [other] lofty abodes built above them, with streams running beneath them—a promise of Allah. Allah does not break His promise. 20Have you not seen that Allah sends down water from the sky, then He conducts it through the ground as springs. Then He brings forth with it crops of diverse hues. Then they wither and you see them turn yellow. Then He turns them into chaff. There is indeed a lesson in that for those who possess intellect. 21Is someone whose breast Allah has opened to Islam so that he follows a light from His Lord…? So woe to those whose hearts have been hardened to the remembrance of Allah. They are in manifest error. 22Allah has sent down the best of discourses, a scripture [composed] of similar motifs, whereat shiver the skins of those who fear their Lord, then their skins and hearts relax at Allah’s remembrance. That is Allah’s guidance, by which He guides whomever He wishes; and whomever Allah leads astray, has no guide. 23What! Is someone who fends off with his face the terrible punishment [meted out to him] on the Day of Resurrection…? And the wrongdoers will be told, ‘Taste what you used to earn.’ 24Those who were before them impugned [the apostles], whereat the punishment overtook them whence they were not aware. 25So Allah made them taste disgrace in the life of the world, and the punishment of the Hereafter will surely be greater, if they knew. 26We have drawn for mankind in this Quran every [kind of] example, so that they may take admonition: 27an Arabic Quran, without any deviousness, so that they may be Godwary. 28Allah draws an example: a man jointly owned by several contending masters, and a man belonging entirely to one man: are the two equal in comparison? All praise belongs to Allah! But most of them do not know. 29You will die, and they [too] will die. 30Then on the Day of Resurrection you will contend before your Lord. 31
