On Him devolves the knowledge of the Hour, and no fruit emerges from its covering and no female conceives or delivers except with His knowledge. On the day when He will call out to them, ‘Where are My ‘partners’?’ They will say, ‘We informed You that there is no witness amongst us.’ 47What they used to invoke before has forsaken them, and they know there is no escape for them. 48Man is never wearied of supplicating for good, and should any ill befall him, he becomes hopeless and despondent. 49If, after distress has befallen him, We let him have a taste of Our mercy, he says, ‘This is my due! I do not think the Hour will ever come, and in case I am returned to my Lord, I will indeed have the best [reward] with Him.’ So We will surely inform the faithless about what they have done, and will surely make them taste a harsh punishment. 50When We bless man, he is disregardful and turns aside; but when an ill befalls him, he makes protracted supplications. 51Say, ‘Tell me, if it is from Allah and you disbelieve in it, who will be more astray than those who are in extreme defiance.’ 52Soon We shall show them Our signs in the horizons and in their own souls until it becomes clear to them that He is the Real. Is it not sufficient that your Lord is witness to all things? 53Indeed, they are in doubt about the encounter with their Lord! Indeed, He embraces all things! 54Surah Ash-ShuraMakiha53In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.Ha, Meem, 1‘Ayn, Seen, Qaf. 2Allah, the All-mighty and the All-wise, thus reveals to you and to those who were before you: 3whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth belongs to Him, and He is the All-exalted, the All-supreme. 4The heavens are about to be rent apart from above them, while the angels celebrate the praise of their Lord and plead for forgiveness for those [faithful] who are on the earth. Indeed, Allah is the All-forgiving, the All-merciful! 5As for those who have taken awliya besides Him, Allah is watchful over them, and you are not their keeper. 6Thus have We revealed to you an Arabic Quran that you may warn [the people of] the Mother of the Towns and those around it, and warn [them] of the Day of Gathering, in which there is no doubt, [whereupon] a part [of mankind] will be in paradise and a part will be in the Blaze. 7Had Allah wished, He would have surely made them one community; but He admits whomever He wishes into His mercy, and the wrongdoers do not have any guardian or helper. 8Have they taken awliya besides Him? [Say,] ‘It is Allah, who is the [true] Wali, and He revives the dead, and He has power over all things. 9Whatever thing you may differ about, its judgement is with Allah. That is Allah, my Lord. In Him, I have put my trust, and to Him do I turn penitently. 10The originator of the heavens and the earth, He made for you mates from your own selves, and mates of the cattle, by which means He multiplies you. Nothing is like Him, and He is the All-hearing, the All-seeing. 11To Him belong the keys of the heavens and the earth: He expands the provision for whomever He wishes, and tightens it [for whomever He wishes]. Indeed He has knowledge of all things.’ 12He has prescribed for you the religion which He had enjoined upon Noah and which We have [also] revealed to you, and which We had enjoined upon Abraham, Moses and Jesus, declaring, ‘Maintain the religion, and do not be divided in it.’ Hard on the polytheists is that to which you summon them. Allah chooses for it whomever He wishes, and He guides to it whomever returns penitently [to Him]. 13They did not divide [into sects] except after the knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves; and were it not for a prior decree of your Lord [granting them reprieve] until a specified time, decision would have been made between them. Indeed those who were made heirs to the Book after them are in grave doubt concerning it. 14So summon to this [unity of religion], and be steadfast, just as you have been commanded, and do not follow their desires, and say, ‘I believe in whatever Book Allah has sent down. I have been commanded to do justice among you. Allah is our Lord and your Lord. Our deeds belong to us and your deeds belong to you. There is no quarrel between us and you. Allah will bring us together and toward Him is the destination.’ 15Those who argue concerning Allah, after His call has been answered, their argument stands refuted with their Lord, and upon them shall be [His] wrath, and there is a severe punishment for them. 16It is Allah who has sent down the Book with the truth and [He has sent down] the Balance. What do you know—maybe the Hour is near! 17Those who do not believe in it ask [you] to hasten it, but those who have faith are apprehensive of it, and know that it is true. Indeed those who are in doubt about the Hour are in extreme error! 18Allah is all-attentive to His servants. He provides for whomever He wishes, and He is the All-strong, the All-mighty. 19Whoever desires the tillage of the Hereafter, We will enhance for him his tillage, and whoever desires the tillage of the world, We will give it to him, but he will have no share in the Hereafter. 20Do they have deities [besides Allah] who have ordained for them a religion not permitted by Allah? Were it not for a [prior] conclusive word, judgement would have been made between them, and indeed a painful punishment awaits the wrongdoers. 21When it is about to befall them, You will see the wrongdoers fearful because of what they have earned; but those who have faith and do righteous deeds will be in the gardens of paradise: they will have whatever they wish near their Lord. That is the mighty grace. 22Such is the good news that Allah gives to His servants who have faith and do righteous deeds! Say, ‘I do not ask you any reward for it except the love of [my] relatives.’ Whoever performs a good deed, We shall enhance its goodness for him. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-appreciative. 23Do they say, ‘He has fabricated a lie against Allah’? If so, should Allah wish He would set a seal on your heart, and Allah will efface the falsehood and confirm the truth with His words. Indeed He knows well what is in the breasts. 24It is He who accepts the repentance of His servants, and excuses their misdeeds and knows what you do. 25He answers [the supplications of] those who have faith and do righteous deeds and enhances them out of His grace. But as for the faithless, there is a severe punishment for them. 26 Were Allah to expand the provision for [all] His servants, they would surely create havoc on the earth. But He sends down in a [precise] measure whatever He wishes. Indeed, He is all-aware, all-seeing about His servants. 27It is He who sends down the rain after they have been despondent, and unfolds His mercy, and He is the Guardian, the All-laudable. 28Among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and whatever creatures He has scattered in them, and He is able to gather them whenever He wishes. 29Whatever affliction that may visit you is because of what your hands have earned, and He excuses many [an offense of yours]. 30You cannot frustrate [Allah] on the earth, and you do not have besides Allah any guardian or helper. 31Among His signs are the ships [that run] on the sea [appearing] like landmarks. 32If He wishes He stills the wind, whereat they remain standstill on its surface. There are indeed signs in that for every patient and grateful [servant]. 33Or He wrecks them because of what they have earned, and He excuses many [an offense]. 34Let those who dispute Our signs know that there is no escape for them. 35Whatever you have been given are the wares of the life of this world, but what is with Allah is better and more lasting for those who have faith and who put their trust in their Lord 36—those who avoid major sins and indecencies, and forgive when angered; 37those who answer their Lord, maintain the prayer, and [conduct] their affairs by counsel among themselves, and they spend out of what We have provided them; 38those who, when afflicted by oppression, defend themselves. 39The requital of evil is an evil like it, so whoever excuses and conciliates, his reward lies with Allah. Indeed, He does not like the wrongdoers. 40As for those who retaliate after being wronged, there is no ground for action against them. 41The ground for action is only against those who oppress the people and commit tyranny in the land in violation of justice. For such there will be a painful punishment. 42As for someone who endures patiently and forgives—that is indeed the steadiest of courses. 43Those whom Allah leads astray have no guardian apart from Him. You will see the wrongdoers, when they sight the punishment, saying, ‘Is there any way for a retreat?’ 44You will see them being exposed to it, humbled by abasement, furtively looking askance. The faithful will say, ‘Indeed the losers are those who have ruined themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, the wrongdoers will abide in lasting punishment. 45They have no awliya to help them besides Allah. There is no way out for those whom Allah leads astray.’ 46Respond to your Lord before there comes a day for which there will be no revoking from Allah. On that day you will have no refuge, nor will you have [any chance for] denial [of your sins]. 47But if they disregard [your warnings], [keep in mind that] We have not sent you as their keeper. Your duty is only to communicate. Indeed when We let man taste Our mercy, he boasts about it; but should an ill visit him because of what his hands have sent ahead, then man is very ungrateful. 48To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He creates whatever He wishes; He gives females to whomever He wishes, and males to whomever He wishes, 49or He combines them males and females, and makes sterile whomever He wishes. Indeed, He is all-knowing, all-powerful. 50It is not [possible] for any human that Allah should speak to him except through revelation or from behind a veil, or send a messenger who reveals by His permission whatever He wishes. Indeed He is all-exalted, all-wise. 51Thus have We imbued you with a Spirit of Our command. You did not know what the Book is, nor what is faith; but We made it a light that We may guide by its means whomever We wish of Our servants. Indeed, you guide to a straight path, 52the path of Allah, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Indeed all matters return to Allah! 53Surah Az-ZukhrufMakiha89In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.Ha, Meem. 1By the Manifest Book: 2We have made it an Arabic Quran so that you may exercise your reason, 3and it is sublime and wise with Us in the Mother Book. 4Shall We keep back the Reminder from you and disregard you because you are an unrestrained lot? 5How many a prophet We have sent to the former peoples! 6There did not come to them any prophet but that they used to deride him. 7So We destroyed those who were stronger than these, and the example of the former peoples has already come to pass. 8If you ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth?’ they will surely say, ‘The All-mighty, the All-knowing created them.’ 9He, who made the earth a cradle for you, and made for you in it ways so that you may be guided [to your destinations], 10and who sent down water from the sky in a measured manner, and We revived with it a dead country. Likewise, you shall be raised [from the dead]. 11He created all the kinds and made for you the ships and the cattle such which you ride, 12that you may sit on their backs, then remember the blessing of your Lord when you are settled on them, and say, ‘Immaculate is He who has disposed this for us, and we [by ourselves] were no match for it. 13Indeed we shall return to our Lord.’ 14They ascribe to Him offspring from among His servants! Man is indeed a manifest ingrate. 15Did He adopt daughters from what He creates while He preferred you with sons? 16When one of them is brought the news of what he ascribes to the All-beneficent, his face becomes darkened and he chokes with suppressed rage, [and says] 17‘What! One who is brought up amid ornaments and is inconspicuous in contests?’ 18They have made the angels—who are servants of the All-beneficent—females. Were they witness to their creation? Their testimony will be written down and they shall be questioned. 19They say, ‘Had the All-beneficent wished, we would not have worshipped them.’ They do not have any knowledge of that, and they do nothing but surmise. 20Did We give them a Book before this, so that they are holding fast to it? 21No, they said, ‘We found our fathers following a creed, and we are indeed guided in their footsteps.’ 22So it has been that We did not send any warner to a town before you, without its affluent ones saying, ‘We found our fathers following a creed and we are indeed following in their footsteps.’ 23 He would say, ‘What! Even if I bring you a better guidance than what you found your fathers following?!’ They would say, ‘We indeed disbelieve in what you are sent with.’ 24Thereupon We took vengeance on them; so observe how was the fate of the deniers. 25When Abraham said to his father and his people, ‘I repudiate what you worship, 26excepting Him who originated me; indeed He will guide me.’ 27He made it a lasting word among his posterity so that they may come back [to the right path]. 28Indeed, I provided for these and their fathers until the truth and a manifest apostle came to them. 29But when the truth came to them, they said, ‘This is magic, and we indeed disbelieve in it.’ 30And they said, ‘Why was not this Quran sent down to some great man from the two cities?’ 31Is it they who dispense the mercy of your Lord? It is We who have dispensed among them their livelihood in the present life, and raised some of them above others in rank, so that some may take others into service, and your Lord’s mercy is better than what they amass. 32Were it not [for the danger] that mankind would be one community, We would have made for those who defy the All-beneficent, silver roofs for their houses and [silver] stairways by which they ascend, 33and [silver] doors for their houses and [silver] couches on which they recline, 34and ornaments of gold; yet all that would be nothing but the wares of the life of this world, and the Hereafter is for the Godwary near your Lord. 35We assign a devil to be the companion of him who turns a blind eye to the remembrance of the All-beneficent. 36Indeed they bar them from the way [of Allah], while they suppose that they are [rightly] guided. 37When he comes to Us, he will say, ‘I wish there had been between me and you the distance between the east and the west! What an evil companion [you are]!’ 38‘Today that will be of no avail to you. As you did wrong, so will you share in the punishment.’ 39Can you, then, make the deaf hear or guide the blind and those who are in manifest error? 40We will indeed take vengeance on them, whether We take you away 41or show you what We have promised them, for indeed We hold them in Our power. 42So hold fast to what has been revealed to you. Indeed, you are on a straight path. 43Indeed it is a reminder for you and your people, and soon you will be questioned. 44Ask those of Our apostles We have sent before you: Did We set up any gods to be worshipped besides the All-beneficent? 45Certainly We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his elite. He said, ‘I am indeed an apostle of the Lord of all the worlds.’ 46But when he brought them Our signs, they indeed laughed at them. 47We did not show them a sign but it was greater than the other, and We visited on them punishment so that they might come back. 48They would say, ‘O magician! Invoke your Lord for us by the covenant He has made with you [to remove this scourge]. We will indeed be guided [when it is removed].’ 49But when We lifted the punishment from them, behold, they would break their pledge. 50And Pharaoh proclaimed to his people, saying, ‘O my people! Do not the kingdom of Egypt and these rivers that run at my feet belong to me? Do you not perceive? 51Am I not better than this wretch who cannot even speak clearly? 52Why no bracelets of gold have been thrown to him, nor any angels accompany him as escorts?’ 53Thus did he mislead his people and they obeyed him. Indeed, they were a transgressing lot. 54So when they roused Our wrath, We took vengeance on them and drowned them all. 55Thus We made them the vanguard and an example for posterity. 56When the Son of Mary was cited as an example, behold, your people raise an outcry. 57They say, ‘Are our gods better or he?’ They cite him to you only for the sake of contention. Indeed, they are a contentious lot. 58He was just a servant whom We had blessed and made an exemplar for the Children of Israel. 59Had We wished We would have set angels in your stead to be [your] successors on the earth. 60[Say,] ‘Indeed he is a portent of the Hour; so do not doubt it and follow me. This is a straight path. 61Do not let Satan bar you [from the way of Allah]. Indeed he is your manifest enemy.’ 62When Jesus brought those manifest proofs, he said, ‘I have certainly brought you wisdom, and [I have come] to make clear to you some of the things that you differ about. So be wary of Allah and obey me. 63Indeed Allah is my Lord and your Lord; so worship Him. This is a straight path.’ 64But the factions differed among themselves. So woe to the wrongdoers for the punishment of a painful day. 65Do they not consider that the Hour may overtake them suddenly while they are unaware? 66On that day, friends will be one another’s enemies, except for the Godwary. 67[They will be told,] ‘O My servants! Today you will have no fear, nor will you grieve 68—those who believed in Our signs and had been Muslims. 69Enter paradise, you and your spouses, rejoicing.’ 70They will be served around with golden dishes and goblets, and therein will be whatever the souls desire and eyes delight in. ‘You will remain in it [forever]. 71That is the paradise you have been given to inherit for what you used to do. 72There are abundant fruits for you in it, from which you will eat.’ 73Indeed the guilty will remain [forever] in the punishment of hell. 74It will not be lightened for them, and they will be despondent in it. 75We did not wrong them, but they themselves were wrongdoers. 76They will call out, ‘O Malik! Let your Lord finish us off!’ He will say, ‘Indeed you will stay on.’ 77‘We certainly brought you the truth, but most of you were averse to the truth.’ 78Have they settled on some [devious] plan? Indeed, We too are settling [on Our plans]. 79Do they suppose that We do not hear their secret thoughts and their secret talks? Yes indeed [We do]! And with them are Our messengers, writing down [everything]. 80Say, ‘If the All-beneficent had offspring, I would have been the first to worship [him].’ 81Clear is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, the Lord of the Throne, of whatever they allege [concerning Him]! 82So leave them to gossip and play until they encounter the day they are promised. 83It is He who is God in the sky, and God on the earth, and He is the All-Wise, the All-Knowing. 84Blessed is He to whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, and with Him is the knowledge of the Hour, and to Him you will be brought back. 85Those whom they invoke besides Him have no power of intercession, except those who are witness to the truth and who know [for whom to intercede]. 86If you ask them, ‘Who created them?’ they will surely say, ‘Allah.’ Then where do they stray? 87And his plaint: ‘My Lord! Indeed these are a people who will not have faith!’ 88So disregard them, and say, ‘Peace!’ Soon they will know. 89Surah Ad-DukhanMakiha59In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.Ha, Meem. 1By the Manifest Book! 2We sent it down on a blessed night, and We have been warning [mankind]. 3Every definitive matter is resolved on it, 4as an ordinance from Us. We have been sending [apostles] 5as a mercy from your Lord—indeed He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing— 6the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and whatever is between them, should you have conviction. 7There is no god except Him: He gives life and brings death, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers. 8But they play around in doubt. 9So watch out for the day when the sky brings on a manifest smoke, 10enveloping the people. [They will cry out:] ‘This is a painful punishment. 11Our Lord! Remove this punishment from us. Indeed we have believed!’ 12What will the admonition avail them, when a manifest apostle had already come to them, 13but they turned away from him, and said, ‘A tutored madman?’ 14Indeed We will withdraw the punishment a little; but you will revert [to your earlier ways]. 15The day We shall strike with the most terrible striking, We will indeed take vengeance [on them]. 16 Certainly We tried the people of Pharaoh before them, when a noble apostle came to them, 17[saying,] ‘Give over the servants of Allah to me; indeed I am a trusted apostle [sent] to you. 18Do not defy Allah. Indeed I bring you a manifest authority. 19I seek the protection of my Lord and your Lord, lest you should stone me. 20And if you do not believe me, keep out of my way.’ 21Then he invoked his Lord, [saying,] ‘These are indeed a guilty lot.’ 22[Allah told him,] ‘Set out by night with My servants; for you will be pursued. 23Leave behind the sea unmoving; for they will be a drowned host.’ 24How many gardens and springs did they leave behind! 25Fields and splendid places, 26and the affluence wherein they rejoiced! 27So it was; and We bequeathed them to another people. 28So neither the sky wept for them, nor the earth; nor were they granted any respite. 29Certainly We delivered the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment 30of Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a tyrant among the transgressors. 31Certainly We chose them knowingly above all the nations, 32and We gave them some signs in which there was a manifest test. 33These ones say, 34‘It will be only our first death, and we shall not be resurrected. 35Bring our fathers back [to life], if you are truthful.’ 36Are they better, or the people of Tubba‘, and those who were before them? We destroyed them; indeed, they were guilty. 37We did not create the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them for play. 38We did not create them except with consummate wisdom; but most of them do not know. 39Indeed the Day of Judgement is the tryst for them all, 40the day when a friend will not avail a friend in any way, nor will they be helped, 41except for him on whom Allah has mercy. Indeed He is the All-mighty, the All-merciful. 42Indeed the tree of Zaqqum 43will be the food of the sinful. 44Like molten copper it will boil in their bellies, 45seething like boiling water. 46[The keepers of hell will be told,] ‘Seize him and drag him to the middle of hell, 47then pour over his head boiling water as punishment, 48[and tell them,] “Taste this! Indeed you are the [self-styled] mighty and noble! 49This is what you used to doubt!’ 50Indeed the Godwary will be in a safe place, 51amid gardens and springs, 52dressed in fine silk and brocade, sitting face to face. 53So shall it be, and We shall wed them to black-eyed houris. 54Secure [from any kind of harm,] there they will call for every kind of fruit [they wish]. 55Other than the first death, they will not taste death therein, and He will save them from the punishment of hell 56—a grace from your Lord. That is the great success. 57Indeed We have made it simple in your language, so that they may take admonition. 58So wait! They [too] are waiting. 59Surah Al-JathiyaMakiha37In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.Ha, Meem. 1The [gradual] sending down of the Book is from Allah, the All-mighty, All-wise. 2In the heavens and the earth there are indeed signs for the faithful, 3There are signs for people who have certainty in your own creation and in animals, He scatters abroad. 4There are signs for people who exercise their reason in the alternation of night and day, in the provision that Allah sends down from the sky, with which He revives the earth after its death, and in the changing of the winds. 5These are the signs of Allah that We recite for you in truth. So what discourse will they believe after Allah and His signs? 6Woe to every sinful liar, 7who hears the signs of Allah being recited to him, yet persists arrogantly as if he had not heard them. So inform him of a painful punishment. 8Should he learn anything about Our signs, he takes them in derision. For such there is a humiliating punishment. 9Ahead of them is hell, and neither what they have earned, nor what they had taken as guardians besides Allah will avail them in any way, and there is a great punishment for them. 10This is [true] guidance, and there is a painful punishment due to defilement for those who defy the signs of their Lord. 11It is Allah who disposed the sea for you[r benefit] so that the ships may sail in it by His command, that you may seek of His bounty and that you may give thanks. 12He has disposed for you[r benefit] whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth; all is from Him. There are indeed signs in that for a people who reflect. 13Say to the faithful to forgive those who do not expect Allah’s days, that He may [Himself] requite every people for what they used to earn. 14Whoever acts righteously, it is for his own soul, and whoever does evil, it is to its own detriment, then you will be brought back to your Lord. 15Certainly We gave the Children of Israel the Book, judgement and prophethood and We provided them with all the good things. We gave them an advantage over all the nations, 16and We gave them manifest precepts. But they did not differ except after knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves. Indeed your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that about which they used to differ. 17Then We set you upon a clear course of the Law; so follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who do not know. 18Indeed they will not avail you in any way against Allah. Indeed the wrongdoers are allies of one another, but Allah is the ally of the Godwary. 19These are eye-openers for mankind, and guidance and mercy for a people who have certainty. 20Do those who have perpetrated misdeeds suppose that We shall treat them like those who have faith and do righteous deeds, their life and death being equal? Evil is the judgement that they make! 21Allah created the heavens and the earth with consummate wisdom, so that every soul may be requited for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged. 22Have you seen him who has taken his desire to be his god and whom Allah has led astray knowingly, set a seal upon his hearing and heart, and put a blindfold on his sight? So who will guide him after Allah [has consigned him to error]? Will you not then take admonition? 23They say, ‘There is nothing but the life of this world: we live and we die, and nothing but time destroys us.’ But they do not have any knowledge of that, and they only make conjectures. 24When Our manifest signs are recited to them, their only argument is to say, ‘Bring our fathers back [to life], if you are truthful.’ 25Say, ‘It is Allah who gives you life, then He makes you die. Then He will gather you on the Day of Resurrection, in which there is no doubt. But most people do not know.’ 26To Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and when the Hour sets in, the falsifiers will be losers on that day. 27And you will see every nation fallen on its knees. Every nation will be summoned to its book: ‘Today you will be requited for what you used to do. 28This is Our book, which speaks truly against you. Indeed We used to record what you used to do.’ 29As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them into His mercy. That is the manifest success! 30But as for the faithless, [they will be asked,] ‘Were not My signs recited to you? But you were disdainful, and you were a guilty lot. 31When it was said, ‘‘Allah’s promise is indeed true, and there is no doubt about the Hour,’’ you said, ‘‘We do not know what the Hour is. We know nothing beyond conjectures, and we do not possess any certainty.’’ ’ 32The evils of what they had done will appear to them, and they will be besieged by what they used to deride. 33And it will be said, ‘Today We will forget you, just as you forgot the encounter of this day of yours. The Fire will be your abode, and you will not have any helpers. 34That is because you took the signs of Allah in derision, and the life of the world had deceived you.’ So today, they will not be brought out of it, nor will they be asked to propitiate [Allah]. 35So all praise belongs to Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of the earth, the Lord of all the worlds. 36To Him belongs all supremacy in the heavens and the earth, and He is the All-mighty, the All-wise. 37
